Less than a month ago, we found out my sister Kaitlin and her fiancé John were finalists to win a dream wedding on the TODAY Show, and after America said “I do” to the newly engaged couple, they had just two weeks to plan their entire wedding(!), which aired live March 24, 2016 on NBC.
What everyone saw on the show was obviously incredible, but gearing up for the wedding was just as much fun. I wanted to share a behind-the-scenes sneak peek of what the day was like leading up to Kaitlin and John’s Big Fat TODAY Wedding, so I’m breaking it down, minute by minute—from the seriously early wakeup call to the last bite of cake.
Shopping for two weeks of TV appearances is not easy. Thanks to Stella & Dot stylist Marni Smith, Kaitlin was decked out in the cutest new jewelry and had something fun and pretty to wear for each of the My Big Fat TODAY Wedding segments leading up to the big day.
The bride-to-be was all about layering pieces. Lots of dainty gold necklaces, stacking and wrap bracelets, and statement earrings.
“It was so fun to get dressed up and go on the show every day,” Kaitlin says. “I’m going to miss it!”
The voting is done, and now it’s time for Kaitlin and John to tie the knot in front of all of America! With just a few days left leading up to the wedding, I wanted to capture how they were each feeling before the big day.
It’s been a long, crazy two weeks of wedding planning, but after five years, Kaitlin and John are ready to make it official and spend forever together.
This category was definitely the most over-the-top of anything we’ve seen so far. The three destinations up for voting: Hawaii, Thailand and Greece.
Option 1: Hawaii
This 10-day getaway includes five days on Kauai filled with a helicopter tour, fishing expedition, Lu’au and lots of lounging by the pool (complete with two waterfalls and grotto.). The last five days of the trip would be spent surfing, snorkeling, horseback riding, and zip lining in Maui—basically everything you could ever want on an island vacation.
Out of all the bakeries in New York City, the TODAY Show got celebrity cake maker Sylvia Weinstock, who has baked cakes for Oprah and Martha Stewart, to create a Hollywood-worthy cake for Kaitlin and John.
We’re officially one week out from the wedding date!
It’s crazy how quickly everything’s been coming along. Yesterday John had his tux fitting—the producers even blindfolded him to help make sure everything America voted for remains a surprise for the big day (including Kaitlin’s dress!).
Kait had her dress fitting this morning, also blindfold, so even she hasn’t seen herself in the dress yet!
Now that the dresses and rings are picked, it’s time to vote for the hair and party favors. The Big Fat TODAY Wedding segment this morning was a special wedding edition of Steals & Deals with Jill Martin. So if you like any of the favors, you can buy them online at a discount for yourself! They showed off three potential party favors: a photo candle, garden tray, and personalized glassware.
Today was a big day! Day two of the first week of wedding planning was all about rings and bridesmaids dresses.
Kaitlin and John looked super cute on the segment, where they pulled each of the ring sets out of gift boxes as the editor-in-chief of BRIDES magazine, Keija Minor, described the three options in detail.
The big day is finally here! After winning the TODAY Show wedding, Kaitlin and John flew back to Chicago for the weekend to do some shopping and fill us in on all the crazy details, and then were back to New York City on Monday morning to start planning their Big Fat TODAY Wedding. The first day they were back on the show, the voting started for the most important aspect of the wedding: the dress (and tux).
America voted on three options, one of which will be what Kaitlin and John are surprised with to wear for their big day.
Option 1: Timeless twist
This first dress was from Anthropologie’s new bridal line, BHLDN. This dress was the most whimsical of the three, with a tulle skirt, floral appliques, and low-V neck with an illusion top. The tux that paired with the first dress was your classic black tuxedo, by Joseph Abboud, with a black striped tie.
My friends are classic all-black offenders (at any given time/event 90% of us are wearing head-to-toe black), so St. Patrick’s Day is a good excuse to work in some color—or at least a few green accessories.
I went with a Topshop tank with Paige jeans and a Zara leather jacket. I have this tank in three colors and it’s an all-time fave—super comfy, flattering, and easy to dress up or down (also now on sale for $15!!). The jeans are also changing my life. I’ve had them for a week and have already worn them three times. Super soft and stretchy and much more like a legging jean than the original Skyline Skinny (go down a size in these!).
